Who are seafarers?
Seafarers play a vital role in today’s world of international commerce, spending months away from home, whilst navigating unpredictable waters to ensure goods reach their destinations. Their resilience and dedication power the engine of global supply chains, touching every corner of our lives from the food on our tables to the technology in our hands.
According to IMO’s estimates, ships transport almost 90 percent of the world’s goods trade.
Why are we working with Panama Maritime Authority?
Since the enforcement of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), Panama Maritime Authority has developing policies and actions to update and implement regulations in relation to seafarers. The aim of the convention (MLC) is to address the employment standards of seafarers in the areas of fair wages, contractual terms, working and living conditions, as well as their health and safety on board ships. This convention consolidates and updates more over than 65 international labour standards related to seafarers adopted, in order to secure the right of all seafarers with decent employment.
This is the « fourth pillar » of the international regulatory regime of the IMO Convention, as well as three other key maritime : The Panama Maritime Authority is compromised with the implementation of these conditions under the IMO White List.
